National Total Margin National Total Margin National Total Margin National Total Margin National Total Margin
National Total Margin was unchanged on a national basis in 2011, but some peer groups and states fared better than others. As the percentiles breakdown shows, some hospitals are doing very well while others are continuing to struggle.

National Cost Per Discharge National Cost Per Discharge National Cost Per Discharge National Cost Per Discharge National Cost Per Discharge
Cost per Inpatient Discharge dropped in 2011. A reasonable conjecture is that higher unemployment coupled with a lack of insurance depressed admissions. Another reasonable conjecture is that some of the measures hospitals have taken to reduce costs are starting to pay off. A one-year event does not provide sufficient data to determine why costs have decreased, but it's likely that both factors are at work.
